Pagano P. Digital library system architectures: principles and experiences.
The architecture of a digital library (DL) system strongly influences its capabilities. In the first part of this thesis we report on our work in designing an abstract framework, called Reference Architecture for Digital Library Systems, where the components required by a DL system and their relationships are defined and described. The core of the research is focussed on the experience gained by designing and implementing a distributed digital library management system, OpenDLib. Finally we illustrate the reasons why we decided to develop DILIGENT, a service-oriented digital library infrastructure powered by Grid technologies, to better satisfy the user requirements. The thesis describes and compares the OpenDLib and DILIGENT systems concentrating, in particular, on that part of the architecture that enables, controls and supplies the necessary features to create and manage digital libraries.
