Abstract
(English)
This study aims to analyse from a spatial point of view the epidemiological data collected during the ISAYA multicentre survey (Italian Study on Asthma in Young Adults, 1998-2000). This survey dealed with the evaluation of the effects of marine aerosol and air pollution on the prevalence of asthma in a population sample of young adults living in Livorno (Tuscany). By means of GIS technology we used distance from the coastline and from the major industrial pollution sources as an indicator of environmental exposure. Results of statistical analyses highlighted the presence of a higher risk of asthma for people living near the coastline (so people exposed to marine aerosol) and a higher risk of respiratory symptoms (cough and phlegm) for people living near the industrial plants.
