Abstract
(English)
Traffic-related air pollution is considered to be a potential risk factor for respiratory human health. To examine whether distance from main roads has an effect on respiratory symptoms/diseases of population, a GIS-based approach is applied to epidemiological survey conducted in Pisa-Cascina area (central Italy) in 1991-93. Subjects are classified according to the distance of residence addresses from a major road (Tosco-Romagnola road). By using GIS technology we reduced the study scale subdividing the whole area into six small areas. Statistical analyses were performed. Results show that GIS approach is useful for a detailed analysis.
