Abstract

This paper focuses on research developed toanalyze seabed vegetation by means of a high frequencyacoustic device. Marine plants play a fundamental role inevery ecosystem and innovative methods to moreaccurately investigate and characterize the coastal seaflora extents are required. Data acquisition about marinevegetation is accomplished by using a high frequency (1.5-2.0 MHz) sector-scan imaging sonar looking at the seabed.The acquisition process and the related technicalconstraints are described. Data collected in a tankpopulated by the Mediterranean plant Posidonia Oceanicaare shown in an image format and acoustic backscatteredsignals are processed. The proposed approach employs astatistical feature-based description of the raw sonar data.
