Abstract

Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walb.) are the most important small pelagic species of the Mediterranean and Adriatic fishery. Since 1975, IRPEM has been conducting research on the stock assessment of both species in the centrai and northern Adriatic Sea, by means of population dynamics methods. The most powerful method used is the Virtual Population Analysis (VPA). In this papera the annual series of Catch per Unit offishing Effort (CPUE) - useful for VPA calculations - were shown, with strong emphasis being put on the procedure used to estimate fishing effort by Generalised Linear Model (GLM). The CPUE was obtained separately for anchovy and sardine in the period 1975-1999, using data relative to the fleet of Porto Garibaldi. On the basis of results, the procedure used to calculate effort was reliable. The anchovy CPUE of Porto Garibaldi showed strong fluctuations over years: a quite similar trend was observed in the biomass of ali the stock estimated by VPA. Such a consistency also occurred for sardine. However, sardine CPUE showed fluctuations even on a shorter time scale, which were not present in the trend of stock biomass yielded by VPA.
