The stability of superposed fluids subjected to gravity is analized as an eigenvalue problem for a linear differential operator. For a viscous fluid the eigenvalue problem is found to be quadratic and to have a discrete bounded spectrum of positive eignvalues and a discrete unbounded spectrum of negative eigenvalues. For an anviscid fluid the eigenvalue problem becomes ordinary and is solved numerically through finite element discretization of the fluid , and conjugate gradient minimization of the Rayleigh quotient.
