Montanari U., Reddy R. Computer Processing of natural scenes: some unsolved problems. Internal note IEI-B71-08, 1971.
In spite of many years of active research in computer processing of visual images, we seem far away from any general theory of computer vision. Specific techniques developed to perform specific tasks, such as edge detectors, appear to be of use only in controlled noise free environments and do not seem to be easily extendable for the analysis of natural scenes. In this paper we will discuss the limitations of some presently used techniques, such as edge detection algorithms, two-dimensional Fourier transforms, and linguistic methods in the analysis of natural scenes, and will propose possible directions for future research which appear to be promising.
