Sevenyears(2001-2008)ofdissolvedorganiccarbon(DOC)verticalprofileswereexaminedinorderto assessthemainprocessesdeterminingDOCconcentrationanddistributioninthemeso-and bathypelagiclayersoftheMediterraneanSea.Asexpected,DOCshowedhighandhighlyvariable concentrationsinthesurfacelayerof57-68 mM (averagevaluesbetween0and100m),withadecrease to 44-53 mM between200and500m.DeepDOCdistributionwasstronglyaffectedbydeep-water formation,withasignificantincreasetovaluesof76 mM inrecentlyventilateddeepwaters,andlow concentrations,comparabletothoseobservedintheopenoceanicwaters(34-45 mM), wherethe oldest,deepwatersoccurred.Inwinter2004/2005adeep-waterformationeventwasobservedand the consequentDOCexportatdepthwasestimatedtorangebetween0.76-3.02TgCmonth-1. Inthe intermediatelayer,themainpathoftheLevantineIntermediateWater(LIW)wasfollowedinorderto estimatetheDOCconsumptionrateinitscore.MultipleregressionbetweenDOC,apparentoxygen utilization(AOU),andsalinityindicatedthat38%oftheoxygenconsumptionwasrelatedtoDOC mineralizationwhentheeffectofmixingwasremoved.IndeepwatersofthesouthernAdriaticSeaa DOC decreaseof6 mM, togetherwithanAOUincreaseof9 mM, wasobservedbetweentheendof January2008andtheendofJune2008(5months).Thesedataindicatearateofmicrobialutilizationof DOC ofabout1.2 mM Cmonth1, with92%oftheoxygenconsumptionduetoDOCmineralization. ThesevaluesaresurprisinglyhighforthedeepseaandrepresentapeculiarityoftheMediterraneanSea.
