The adsorption process of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd to the cell surface of Phaeodactylum Tricornutum, has been studied both in a simple system, as organic-free seawater, in order to obtain the adsorption isotherms, and in a complex system, as seawater enriched with exudates, in order to get information on the ability of the exudates to affect the adsorption capacity of the cell surface.The experimental data, analysed as Langmuir isotherms, allowed the parameters gammamax (maximum amount of metal adsorbed as mol x cell-1) and KMeSi (adsorption equilibrium coefficient) to be estimated. The results showed that th interaction metal ion-cell surface can be described by a two-site model, considering the presence of low and high affinity sites, and that the order of affinity of the metals is: Cu>Pb>Cd>Zn. Moreover, the parameters Lt (total ligand concentration) and KMeLi (conditional stability constant), describing the complexation capacity of the cellular exudates in the adsorption process has been evaluated.
