Abstract

Fluorescence Spectroscopy (FS) and reverse phase - high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) were employed to get in the hydrophobic fractions, retained onto C18-Sep-Pak cartridges, both of dissolved Marine Organic Matter (SPE-MOM) and the extracellular compounds released by the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (SPE-MOM). Emission and Syncronous scan spectra allowed three groups of fluorophores to be detected in different spectral regions. RP-HPLC enabled to isolate two main groups of fluorophoric material which was identified as photochemical products of flavins. The fluorescence quenching technique was used to detect the complexation parameters of each group of fluorophoric material.
