Abstract
(English)
A fractional-step finite element method for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The solution is computed by using a discontinuous approximation of the velocity field and a continuous approximation of the pressure. At each time step a linearized convection-diffusion problem plus a projection problem, that enforces the incompressibility condition, are computed. The projection problem is equivalent to a Poisson equation in the pressure only. The scheme is unconditionally stable. The well-posedness of the projection problem, and the stability property of the complete algorithm are discussed. Numerical results on the solution of the driven cavity problem with unstructured meshes confirm the robustness of the method, even when, at high Reynolds numbers, the flow is underresolved.
