Abstract
(English)
We consider a general strategy for building shell elements that avoid membrane locking for Koiter shell formulation if the shell is bending dominated, but retain good approximation properties in the membrane dominated case. A similar strategy could also be applied to Naghdi shell models. So far, the strategy is vague, here and there, and the elements produced by it are quite ugly. However, there is hope that the strategy could be improved in order to provide more elegant and easy-to-use elements. Moreover it seems important, to start with, to ascertain that elements capable of provably work in both bending and membrane dominated cases do actually exist.
